En 800 år gammel kirkeruin
- St. Olav’s Church and St. Mary’s Chapel at Bamle in Telemark,Norway
- An 800 year old church ruin

– On the Altar Table, the recesses for relics can barely be seen on this picture,
Recesses were probably covered with a stone, iron or bronze plate.

“According to old documents, it was dedicated to St. Olav on October 4th (the year is missing), probably around 1150. It was the center of the Olav veneration in the Gimsøy Monastery area in the Middle Ages. The church is built in the Romanesque-Norman style. The side chapel is St. Mary’s Chapel. The niche on the outside of the eastern choir wall had a saint’s image, probably of St. Olav. There are recesses on the altar table for a relic hiding place. The church had a reading room with an entrance in the choir arch. In 1845, the old church was demolished so that the stone from its walls would be used partly to complete the foundation wall under the new church, and partly to build a secure fence around the cemetery.”

ELECTION CHURCH 1814
This church was the site of the first round of the elections to the National Assembly in 1814. This was Norway’s first national election. The St. Olav’s Church from around 1150 was replaced with a new church in 1845.”
